Citywest shopping centre is a mixed development consisting of a two storey mall offering a wide range of fashion and convenience stores, as well as several restaurants, offices and apartments.
Colt was required to design a system to provide both means-of-escape and natural ventilation and smoke ventilation for all areas of the development on the basis of a report from the Fire Consultant. Owing to the geometry of the building each section of the mall required a different design.
In order to keep the smoke layer at a sufficiently high level in one reservoir of the atrium, Colt provided a scheme of mechanical ventilation comprising extract fans, Seefire natural louvered ventilators, Meteor natural flap ventilators and pneumatic control panels complete with BMS connections, rain sensors and fireman's override switches. In another reservoir adequate protection was achieved using a straightforward natural ventilation scheme.
Colt also provided Coltlite natural glazed ventilators and associated controls to provide smoke control for the residential units.
